Whatever You Do, Don’t Be Average!

If you happen to get my personal voice mail, you’ll hear me say, “Do what average people do, you’ll have what average people have.”   It’s one of my favorite quotes of all time.

The new year is just around the corner, and maybe you’ve already taken some time to set some goals for yourself.  If you have, AWESOME!  If you haven’t, there’s still time to get your flight plan ready for 2012:

  1. Do your goals include finding a new job or starting a new project?  Be sure to announce your plans with a high-speed flyover.  You’ll find that people will come out of the woodwork to help you. How can anyone give you guidance, make introductions, or offer advice if they don’t know what you’re up to?  This is also a great way of holding yourself accountable for results!
  2. Get specific.  For instance, don’t just say, “I’m looking for a job,” but be more detailed:  “I’m an expert recipe developer” or “I make award-winning cocktails” or “I’m planning to use my skills as a photographer and open a portrait studio.”

Can you recall a situation where you said, “I am going to do whatever it takes and nothing will stop me?”  That is thinking with a breakthrough mentality, which simply means you absolutely REFUSE to settle in the smallest of moments and demand a breakthrough life. This is the first step in rising above being “average.”  You can do it, but you need to step out of your usual comfort zone.  Try something different, new, exciting, or even a little scary!

It’s this kind of thinking and determination that will bring you that much closer to your next job or anything you’ve set as a goal or aspiration!

Preventing Obstacles on the Road to Success

As a combat pilot, I learned that it’s extremely important to check for damage to the aircraft and identify the kind of repairs needed, as well as review the mission to see what can be better executed the next time.

If you want to make changes in your life – personally, professionally, etc. – you need to take a good look at the “repairs” you need to make within you to make the changes happen.

You can do this by gathering your crew or ask your “wingman” to provide you with real and honest feedback.  What are your weaknesses?  What improvements can be made?  What strengths can you offer and own completely?

Remember that failure is not your final destination – you must keep pushing forward!

To get past the obstacles, use this 4-step plan:

  1. Avoid making excuses
  2. Commit to the commitment
  3. Take action – no matter how minor it may seem
  4. Review, recharge, and re-attack

A breakthrough mentality creates a breakthrough life. There’s no such thing as a dream out of reach or a goal that’s unobtainable. Turn your aspirations into action and create a path that will get you out of your rut. You’re not stuck; you’re just not moving.

Who needs a runway?  Take off from where you are!

Making Failure a Launching Point!

I heard LaDonna Gatlin say, “Failure is fertilizer”.

I’ve had plenty of failures along the way, big and small alike. When I failed a tactics during my second deployment to Iraq, I was devastated, because I KNEW people were watching to see how I performed. I felt like I had let so many people down: women, black folks, my family…the Corps. I passed it the next week with flying colors, but that wasn’t the point. I hadn’t passed it the first time, and not passing it the first time had dire consequences.

Through an interesting journey too lengthy to share here, I realized that failure placed me in the right places at the right time.

What did I learn?

I believe things happen to direct our paths, and how we respond versus react to them is the key to how a situation turns out.  Second, all our experiences are just preparing us for that next mission we’ve been called to do in life.

Failure is inevitable along the way. Make it a launching point instead of your final destination!

What Do You Really Want?

Take a moment right now and ask yourself the following questions. What do you really want out of your life? What do you want for your role in your company? What do you want your journey to look like? Do you want to take on a specific project? If so, will it be working toward your career goals and objectives? How do you want to arrive at the end of your journey and how do you want to look and feel when you get there?

These questions asked and answered up front can easily increase the enjoyment of your journey in creating your breakthrough career. Remember, it is okay not to know how you are going to get there in the very beginning. In fact, if your vision or dream is big enough, there is a very good chance you will not know how to reach your desired end state, but the answers are just a step away. Once you have the main question of “What you really want” answered, it is time to craft a plan to make it happen.

Stop Making Excuses…go from Zero to Breakthrough!

We all think of things to keep us from doing what we need to do. Prime example…just as I was moving into this first point I thought, “I don’t have my computer accessible to type, so maybe I should wait until later.” Procrastination had just reared its head…

I’d been sitting on my plane over three hours for what was supposed to be a one hour flight. Our departure was delayed due to bad weather at our destination. Thirty minutes later, you heard the captain’s voice come over the intercom. From the moment he started speaking, you could hear from the tone of his voice that it wasn’t going to be good news. Bad weather was now rolling into our area and we were going to be delayed for at least another 45 minutes. You couldn’t help but hear all the groans from everyone on the plane.

An hour and a half later, when it was finally time for us to take off, I was shutting my computer down when I noticed I was in the red with only 11% on my battery. I would have no choice, I’d be writing for the remainder of this flight.

As I sat in my seat, waiting to take off, I took out my notebook and started to jot down some ideas. As I wrote, I began to feel stuck! Stuck because I hadn’t done or accomplished many of the things I’d wanted to accomplish when it comes to being productive on a daily basis. Then I thought, hey…wait a minute!!! I was supposed to be the Breakthrough Guru right?!?!? What was going on? Then I realized I wasn’t stuck, I just wasn’t moving! I hadn’t been taking action, but it looked more like procrastination! I decided to act…NOW!

I flipped to a fresh piece of paper and started to write. It felt great! I had finished writing the bullet points to getting unstuck and was moving on to writing the main body of the article when I stopped and said, “But it would be better for me to write on my computer. I can edit, I can type faster than I can write, I’d be able to save it, it would be neater, and I won’t have to transcribe it later” (as I’m doing right now) and on, and on, and on… After ALMOST entertaining that thought process, I stopped in my tracks and told myself to WRITE! NOW! Move into action…NOW!

The bottom line is, STOP MAKING EXCUSES, and just move forward into action! Conditions will probably always look better at another time. Look back on opportunities you’ve taken or lost. Were the conditions optimal? Probably not. Just remember, you have traded a day of your life for the actions you’ve chosen to take, OR NOT TO TAKE. We all have choices. Choose to move…NOW!

Mentoring as Your Competitive Advantage

Mentoring is another essential form of leadership! We all have something to share with each other. Life is just a big classroom. Many times a traditional mentoring relationship might be thought of as an older person working with a younger person due to the fact that when you have spent many years in a position or with a company, you tend to be older than many of the new people beginning the onboarding process. I would like you to think of it in terms of someone experienced working with someone who wishes to gain more experience and knowledge.

The younger generation entering the workforce tends to be very computer and technology savvy. Some of these individuals would be more than happy to mentor individuals who may not have been as exposed to all the new technology that is now available to us.

Choices, Choices, Choices

My challenge to you is to decide on some basic goals, short term and long term. Look at where you are starting from and where you want to land. What are some of the highlights you would like to see along the way? Do you want to fly straight there, or are you adventurous and want to see some of the out of the way sights?
There are many ways to navigate your career. Would you like to stay with the company where you are currently employed for your entire career? Do you want to remain in a particular division inside that company and work your way up? Do you want to transition from admin into a technical field inside your organization? Is this going to require more schooling and/or education?

You HAVE Permission to Engage!

I respect your time and will only provide you with information, tips, tactics and proven battle tested strategies to create HUGE Breakthroughs in your life!
